Why don’t you spend time where you use to live? Because you don’t live there anymore! So why do your thoughts dwell in the past often bringing feelings of guilt and shame when you don’t live there anymore? The past is not who you are, and it should not be where you live.
Why do people insist on living in the past? Oftentimes, they do not feel worthy of love and forgiveness so, they will find something to continually beat themselves up. What better to use for that than the “mistakes” you have made in your life? The verbal abuse that we can impose on ourselves through the thoughts in their mind can be incredibly brutal.
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Would you say those words to a loved one? Of course not, but you will say them over and over to yourself?
If a friend spoke to you the way the voice inside your mind does, would you remain friends with that person? If the answer is no, it’s time to change those thoughts and give yourself the love, kindness and compassion you extend to those you care about. You should be at the top of your list of loved ones!
We are created to be forward moving creatures in the flesh and in the spirit. It is physically difficult and awkward to look back or walk backwards, and it is spiritually detrimental to look back when the memories cause pain and heartache. As soon as you go there, your body immediately returns to the vibration you were holding at that time and you actually re-live the moment again and again. You can see it in the expressions on their face and through their body language. Those who are confident in who they are do not spend time blaming others or themselves for past regretful events because they don’t live there anymore.
There is nothing you can do to change the circumstances from your past, and in many cases, you probably don’t even have a clear memory because of time passed and your limited perception. If you ask two people who were at the exact same place, at the exact same time, they are going to give you two different accounts because of their physical, mental and emotional perceptions of the incident. I am not making light of real trauma, instances of neglect and/or abuse, but even this can be left in a place where it can no longer hurt you. You can overcome your past no matter what!
You are not the same person you were yesterday, last week or last year. The people around you are not the same either. We evolve, change and expand as we live life and learn about ourselves and others. Don’t hold yourself hostage to what use to be and don’t hold them hostage either!
Instead of trying to fix the past, press on to what lies ahead! This is your life! This is not dress rehearsal, this is it! You must stop wasting valuable time and your precious energy on the things you can never change which will only leave you frustrated and unfulfilled. It’s time to move forward and get excited about your life!
